I'm sorry to learn of your Dad's passing, Amar. How beautiful that he's instilled such a sense of adventure in you and the ability to take us on these journeys with your writing 🙏🌏

What a lovely compliment. Thanks, Catherine. I spent a fair amount of yesterday’s eulogy lamenting my dad’s aversion to risk and asceticism. But it wasn’t always that way.

He went from Tanzania, to Baroda, to the South of England, working his way up the accountancy ranks and finding success his way.

Dined out, road-tripped around, peacocked about in flamboyant garms, was introduced to my mother, found love, changed careers and forged a partnership that helped to set two boys on their way. Unfortunately their excessive sacrifice – in trying times, it must be said – diminished the joy we could experience as a family.

I wish I could go back in time hang around with dad of his youth because we would have really got on.

I too am often frustrated by the lack of time-travel options available to humankind...things we'd do differently, questions I'd ask....Can only echo the suggestion that sometime in the future you try and retrace some of your parents steps, seek out family or their friends that can share tales or at least get suited and booted and dine out at one of their favourite places?

Yes to all of the above. I am aiming to do a version of this trip with a cousin or two. Also see where dad grew up in Mwanza (Tanzania) and Mum in Kampala.

Wow. Love it. Can you not go in his wake? Carry his spirit with you and see things through his eyes as well as yours?

It would be quite the adventure :-)

Cheers, Christian. You've done a bit of travel to the Motherland, am I right?

I hope to make it out there again. Maybe a cousin or two could come along for the ride.

Yes. I'm still to write up my journals from India but I did find an audio tape of me wandering round Varanasi after a bang lassi. I was comparing it to Ankh Morpork and freaked out by Kalashnikovs and horned bulls. A guaranteed adventure around every corner :-)
